STATEMENT

“世界”と“自分”を確認する

　私が幼いころから育った場所は、“千里ニュータウン”という1970年の大阪万博に伴って開発されたニュータウンだ。それは当時、“未来都市の象徴”であっただろうし、そして現在も、高層マンションが立ち並び、生活に必要とされるものは全て完備された、何不自由ない便利で美しい、落ち着いた街である。
しかし私はこういった街の様相に違和感があった。人々は与えられた場所で与えられた方法で同じように生活し、“プライベート”や“個性”は極端に守られ、人間が生きているなら生じるであろう“手ざわり”のようなもの、“におい”のようなものが全く感じられないのである。目の前の世界は、どこを取っても無機質で、均質化しているように思われた。
私はそんな風景の中で、五感が麻痺し、自分自身の存在が稀薄になっていくかのように感じられた。

私の制作の根底には、このような身体への焦燥感がある。つまり、作る過程で素材のディティールを知ることや、単純作業で身体を繰り返し使うことは、私にとって“世界”と“自分”の存在を確認するための、最初の方法であったと言える。

　そして今は、自分の身体そのものを世界の中に放り込み、そこで生きてみることによって、やはり同じように“世界”と“自分”を確認している。
そこから生まれる表現は、呼吸のように、あるいは風景画ように、目に映る世界や他者を反映しているに過ぎない。しかし「私にはこう見える」と晒していくことが、私を生んだ社会に対する問いになると信じている。

Identifying the "world" and "oneself"

The place where I was brought up was a new town called "Senri new town", which was developed with the Osaka Expo in 1970. It was probably "the symbol of the future city" at that time. And nowadays, there are still high rise apartments are lining up, and it is a convenient and beautiful calm town in ease and comfort which has everything you necessitate for your livelihood.
However, I had a sense of incongruity in the face of such town. In this new town, I can hardly feel the "touch" or "smell" which should be generated from a living man. And it's because the people in this new town lives similar in the given place with the given method, and their "privacy" and "individuality" are extremely protected. The every part of the world in front of you seemed inorganic and homogenized in this new town. In such scenery, my five senses got paralyzed, and I felt like my existence would become thin.

There is an impatience to such a body on the basis of my work. After all, I can say that to get to know the details of a material in the process of creating, and to use the body repeatedly in the monotonous work, was the first methods for me to identify the existence of the "world" and "oneself".

And today, I am also identifying the "world" and "oneself" in the manner that I throw myself into the globe and survive there. The expression produced from there is simply reflecting the world and the others that is mirrored in the eyes, like breathing or a landscape. Nevertheless, I believe that exposing this idea of "It looks to me like this" turns a question toward the society which produced myself.
