「世界は神によって作られたが、オランダはオランダ人によって作られた。」という文を読んだ。
オランダのほとんどの土地が海抜0ｍ以下に位置していることから、歴史的に風車や堤防などを駆使し海水と戦って自分たちの住む土地を生み出してきた。つまりこの一文は彼らの自負のようなものを表している。
しかし私にとってこの文章は非常に衝撃的であった。なぜなら私は日本で育つ中で、台風や、土砂災害、地震、津波、火山噴火、雪害など、年中途絶えることのない日本の自然の脅威をDNAレベルにまで擦り込んでおり、自然をコントロールできるなどと考えたことなど一度も無かったからである。これはおそらく多くの日本人が同じであろうし、だからこそ八百万神などが私たちの古代宗教の中にはあり、私たちは山に向かって山の踊りを踊り、海に向かって海の歌を歌ってきたのだろう。
しかし、もしこの一文が示すように、オランダ人がオランダを、今まさに自分たちが立っているこの土地を、森を、川を、自らの手で作ったという意識があるのなら、それはおそらく自然に対する考え方や文化の発生の仕方、何から何まで私たちとは違うのではないだろうか、とそんなことを思った。
オランダには山が無い。だから私はオランダに山を作った。
彼らにとってこの「山」はどのように映っているのだろうか。

"The world was created by God, but the Netherlands was created by Dutch people."
The above mentioned sentence is cited from a book that I read during research before arriving in the Netherlands. It means that Holland was reclaimed from the ocean by draining, because almost all of the country is situated lower than the ocean.
This really impressed me because in Japan we fear nature. This is related to Shinto, the native religion of Japan, chiefly a system of worshiping natural forces and ancestors. Though not everyone believes in this. Most people in Japan don’t have a religion. Still, even without one, they feel some kind of fear towards nature. From the ancient times up till now, Japan had to deal with natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, tsunamis and so on. Living in Japan is hard because it means living with the nature. This explains our fear of nature and for that rea- son we created songs for the mountains, sea, etc. Our culture is inspired by the nature, that had existed earlier than the people.
For my project, I am curious to see how the environment has an influence on the human mind. Regarding your view upon nature, as well as researching your cultural history on that matter, I want to pose a question:
“What does nature mean for you?”
